Kikwete good governance feat earns him top Africa award
PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete's efforts of strengthening and maintaining good governance during his tenure at the helm of the country have paid off after being awarded with the Good Governance in Africa award.
According to a statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communications yesterday, President Kikwete was given the recognition by the African Achievers Awards whose headquarters is in South Africa.
As a result of this recognition, Mr Kikwete has been invited to South Africa to receive the award in a grand ceremony scheduled to take place at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg today.
However, due to the tight schedule at home, President Kikwete has nominated the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Dr Asha- Rose Migiro, to receive the award in his honour as well as present a paper on ''Africa's Unity: Prospects and Challenges.''
The award is to honour Mr Kikwete for nurturing, strengthening, advocating and maintaining good governance in Tanzania for the ten-year period of his tenure. He joins only a handful of others to have received the prestigious award.
It was first presented to Archbishop Desmond Tutu of the Anglican Church of South Africa in 2011 as a way to recognise his fight for human rights, equality, justice and peace.
President Kikwete was selected out of over 1,000 people whose names were presented before an independent international panel and with members from Europe and South Africa for selection.
The African Achievers Awards are intended to recognise individuals as well as institutions that have excelled in the welfare and development of the African award.
