Kezia is bound for Rwanda

Friday, 28 February 2014
A FORMER Ivybridge Community College student is preparing for
volunteer work in Africa.
Kezia Stephenson will be travelling to Rwanda next month for just over
two months as part of her gap year before going on to study at Oxford
University.
The teenager has already spent a month in France this year to
volunteer at a French nursery in the Alps.
Kezia, who lives in Ivybridge, will be travelling to Rwanda as part of
the International Citizen Service with Tearfund, an international
charity working in the developing world, on March 24 with 16 other
volunteers.
The ICS is a Government-funded programme, aimed at 18 to 25-year-olds,
that provides sponsorship to travel abroad as part of a team of
volunteers and will work alongside a group of Rwandan nationals.
During the trip, Kezia will be taking part in a number of activities,
from helping street children with education and sport, to working with
self-help groups teaching health and sanitisation.
Kezia found the programme while searching for things to do during her gap year.
'This one stood out to me,' she said. 'I'm interested with
international development and the programme also has an educational
side to it as well.'
The 18-year-old will return to Ivybridge in June and will then prepare
to leave for Oxford where she will read philosophy, politics and
economics.
It is thought she will be the first Ivybridge Community College
student to read the course at Oxford.
She was led to the course by her interests in the developing world and
the issues surrounding poverty and justice.

-“The root cause of the Rwandan tragedy of 1994 is the long and past historical ethnic dominance of one minority ethnic group to the other majority ethnic group. Ignoring this reality is giving a black cheque for the Rwandan people’s future and deepening resentment, hostility and hatred between the two groups.”
