[Rwanda Forum] Rwanda: Kalinga Ideology

Kalinga Ideology

The Abega clan, also known as Bega or Ega clan, had traditionally provided queen mothers to the ruling Nyiginya Tutsi dynasty until it usurped power from the Nyiginyas in the Rucuncu Coup of 1896 where the royal drum was replaced by the leader of the coup, Queen Kanjogera.

The new royal drum, the Kalinga, quickly filled up with more Hutu body parts than the original one that had been there for centuries.

Queen Kanjogera, who is considered Rwanda's most prolific and sadistic serial killer, personally cut off most of the body parts and organs off her victims in public view to send a message.

It is the Abega clan, after killing prominent members of the Nyiginya clan like Fred Rwigema to consolidate power at the helm of Tutsi elites who had become Ugandan citizens, that led the return of Kanjogera's version of Kalinga as RPF-Inkotanyi in 1990.

-“The root cause of the Rwandan tragedy of 1994 is the long and past historical ethnic dominance of one minority ethnic group to the other majority ethnic group. Ignoring this reality is giving a black cheque for the Rwandan people’s future and deepening resentment, hostility and hatred between the two groups.”
