WASHINGTON DC: ANTI-KAGAME RALLY AT THE WHITE HOUSE

Lafayette Park, The White House
Rwandan, Burundian and Congolese opposition political parties and civil society organizations operating in the United States of America have pooled their efforts together to denounce Kagame's visit to the White House.

One may wonder how did this renowned criminal -also known as the African Hitler- end up on the Obama's guest list. Paul Kagame's human rights abuses, his dictatorship against the Rwandan people, his criminal record in Rwanda and broad are not consistent with the American values and ideals. In many regards, Paul Kagame is worse than Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and other dictators who were not invited to Washington.

Paul Kagame is a corrupt leader who has embezzled millions of public funds to finance his lavish lifestyle. He has killed and/or imprisoned hundreds of journalists and his political opponents, including prominent opposition leaders such as Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza of FDU-Inkingi, Deo Mushayidi of PDP-Imanzi and Bernard Ntaganda of PS-Imberakuri, just to name a few. He has sent his army to DRC and has used child soldiers and war proxies to loot natural resources, rape women, terrorize the population or kill anyone opposed to his criminal enterprise. As a result, more than 6 million Congolese and Rwanda refugees have been killed in DRC.

Dear African friends, Congolese, Burundian and Rwandan of North America, let's unite in this critical moments so that we may get rid the Great Lakes region of this dictator. Join many other freedom fighters across North America who vowed to free in no time all of the oppressed and voiceless people of Rwanda, Congo and Burundi. This is a great opportunity for all of us to proudly show our commitment to the peaceful struggle for peace, freedom and democracy in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

Should you need more information or wish to support our efforts, please feel free to contact our event coordinator, Mr. Felicien Hategekimana, Mobilization Coordinator, FDU-Inkingi American Chapter at hategekimana125@yahoo.com or 269-779-6655.

We look forward to seeing you in Washington DC. Bring your friends, your stories, your drums, trumpets and Vuvuzela.

[AfricaWatch] New Book on Rwanda: Genocide Lives in Us: Women, Memory, and Silence in Rwanda, by Jennie E. Burnet

Genocide Lives in Us
Women, Memory, and Silence in Rwanda
Jennie E. Burnet

Women in Africa and the Diaspora
Aili Tripp and Stanlie James, Series Editors

"A profoundly empathetic and comprehensive narrative that goes to the bottom of Rwandans' everyday struggles triggered by a contextual and inevitable urge to face their own violent past."
—Aloys Habimana, Rwandan human rights lawyer

In the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, Rwandan women faced the impossible—resurrecting their lives amidst unthinkable devastation. Haunted by memories of lost loved ones and of their own experiences of violence, women slowly rebuilt their lives and traversed dangerous emotional and political terrain to emerge as leaders in Rwanda today. This clear and engaging ethnography of survival tackles three interrelated phenomena—memory, silence, and justice—and probes the contradictory roles women played in postgenocide reconciliation.

Based on over a decade of intensive fieldwork, Genocide Lives in Us provides a unique grassroots perspective on a postconflict society. Anthropologist Jennie E. Burnet relates ordinary Rwandan women's heart-wrenching stories of survival with sensitivity and uncovers political and historical themes in their personal narratives. Allowing the silenced voices of ordinary women to be heard, Burnet sheds light on women's incredible resilience. She concludes that women's leading role in Rwanda's renaissance emerged from the dire post-genocide situation that forced women into new roles, from advocacy by the Rwandan women's movement, and from the inclusion of women in the postgenocide government.

Portrait of author Jennie E. BurnetJennie E. Burnet is assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Louisville. Her research focuses on women's roles in peace-building and democratization and on the long-term consequences of gender-based violence in conflict.

Praise:

"The stories of life in postgenocide Rwanda presented in this book are deeply touching and challenge the dominant discourse that portrays Rwanda as a simple story of successful postconflict rebuilding. This book is essential reading for anyone with interest in Rwanda and in the legacies of violence, gender, society, memory, and transitional justice."
—Timothy Longman, Boston University

"The most important contribution of this fine study is Burnet's conceptual breakthrough exploring the role of 'amplified silence.' Where the power of official discourse prevents many from mourning their losses, such silences speak loudly to those aware of them."
—Catharine Newbury, Smith College

"This rich array of careful scholarship provides a valuable, multifaceted view of a country still struggling with the aftereffects of genocide and civil war. It offers an important corrective to the naively rosy picture of Rwanda that too often prevails in the American media."—Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold's Ghost

-“The root cause of the Rwandan tragedy of 1994 is the long and past historical ethnic dominance of one minority ethnic group to the other majority ethnic group. Ignoring this reality is giving a black cheque for the Rwandan people’s future and deepening resentment, hostility and hatred between the two groups.”

-« Ce dont j’ai le plus peur, c’est des gens qui croient que, du jour au lendemain, on peut prendre une société, lui tordre le cou et en faire une autre ».

-“The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.”

-“I have loved justice and hated iniquity: therefore I die in exile.

-“The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”
