Rwanda ex-spy chief 'murdered' in South Africa

Rwanda ex-spy chief 'murdered' in South Africa

A former head of Rwanda's external intelligence service was found strangled in a hotel in South Africa, where he has lived in exile for several years, his opposition party said on Thursday.
"The Rwandan opposition is deeply saddened to announce the assassination of Colonel Patrick Karegeya in Johannesburg," the Rwanda National Congress (RNC) said in a statement. "His body was found in a hotel where he went for a meeting."
"It is true," Frank Ntwali, the party's chairman for Africa told AFP early Thursday. "He was strangled by agents of (Rwandan President Paul) Kagame."
Ntwali said Karegeya was killed at the Michelangelo Towers, an upmarket hotel in the Johannesburg suburb of Sandton. It was not immediately clear if he was killed on Tuesday night or on Wednesday.
Karegeya, in his early fifties, was for a long time very close to Kagame. He served as head of external intelligence for around a decade before being demoted to army spokesman and was later arrested and jailed.
He was stripped of his rank of colonel in 2006 and fled into exile the following year.
Another prominent Rwandan dissident in South Africa, Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, survived two assassination attempts in June 2010.
The RNC statement said investigations had found "overwhelming evidence of the involvement of Rwandan intelligence operatives in those attempts".
Rwanda has vehemently denied involvement in the attacks.
Karegeya and Nyamwasa are both prominent figures in the opposition party, despite not holding specific posts.
Karegeya leaves behind his wife Leah and three children.

Rwanda: calls for a strong international response to the assassination of opposition Colonel Patrick Karegeya

Objet: Rwanda: calls for a strong international response to the assassination of opposition Colonel Patrick Karegeya

Lausanne, January 1st, 2014
FDU-INKINGI calls for a strong international response to the assassination of Colonel Patrick Karegeya in South Africa.
Today, the opposition hero, Colonel Patrick Karegeya was assassinated in Johannesburg (South Africa). This comes after his colleague, General Kayumba Nyamwasa survived two attempts in June 2010.

Many Rwandan opposition figures have been murdered inside and outside Rwanda. For example, on 13 July 2010, the late André Kagwa Rwisereka, Vice President of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda was murdered in Butare (Rwanda) on the eve of the Presidential election won by President Paul Kagame with over 93% ; on 16 May 1998, former Interior Minister Seth Sendashonga, was assassinated in Nairobi (Kenya) after launching an opposition party. Critic journalists have been murdered inside the country and in exile. Key opposition leaders are languishing in prison on politically motivated charges : Only in December 2013, Madam Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, FDU-INKINGI Chair, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison ; Mr. Sylvain Sibomana, FDU-INKINGI interim secretary general has been handed a sentence of two years ; Mr. Deogratias Mushayidi, the President of PDP Imanzi, was given a life sentence in 2011 ; Mr. Bernard Ntaganda, the founding President of PS Imberakuri is serving a 4 year jail term. The former Present Pasteur Bizimungu and the former Minister Charles Ntakirutinka, have served hefty sentences after the creation of their opposition party PDR Ubuyanja.
The fact that the international community has been incoherent and non-vocal on crimes committed by the current regime has encouraged the dictator and his henchmen to eliminate key opposition leaders.

FDU-INKINGI would like to extend deep condolences to the family of Colonel Patrick Karegeya and to all members of the opposition, on the death of this hero and icon of liberation of our country, a freedom fighter and a great soldier.

For the sake of lasting peace in Rwanda, we call upon a strong international response to this political assassination.

-“The root cause of the Rwandan tragedy of 1994 is the long and past historical ethnic dominance of one minority ethnic group to the other majority ethnic group. Ignoring this reality is giving a black cheque for the Rwandan people’s future and deepening resentment, hostility and hatred between the two groups.”

-« Ce dont j’ai le plus peur, c’est des gens qui croient que, du jour au lendemain, on peut prendre une société, lui tordre le cou et en faire une autre ».

-“The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.”

-“I have loved justice and hated iniquity: therefore I die in exile.

-“The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”
